For John Farnham, being part of the Hay Mate concert in Mornington on Dec 15 was an important thing to do.
"Farmers are the backbone of this country," he says. "I understand what they are going through. They are doing it tough through this drought. Not only do we want to help out, we want to show them that they have our support."

All profits raised from the massive Sunday event went to Rural Aid's Buy A Bale campaign. Rural Aid is one of the leading rural charities in Australia and have been championing the cause to farmers doing it tough. The Buy A Bale program supports farmers and rural communities throughout Australia, delivering hay and other essential items for those who have no feed left for their livestock.

Nine Network's telecast of the Hay Mate - a bush Christmas appeal for our Aussie Farmers concert drew $343,000 worth of donations. At the end of the broadcast, it was revealed that $4.350 million had been raised for Rural Aid's disaster relief program. A staggering $4.60 million has now been raised! It will go to purchasing hay and providing water and financial assistance for fire and drought-affected farmers.

The show was organised primarily by Glenn Wheatley, who in 2018 raised over $2 million for a similar show in Tamworth.

John Farnham's set is said to have sparked off at least $1 million worth of viewer donations.

Glenn Wheatley, said: "I am beyond pleased with the result from Hay Mate. With the help of Rural Aid we can commence distribution of hay and water immediately to the farmers most in need. The generosity of all the Australians who donated is very touching.
“The generosity of all the artists who performed and donated their time is also touching.
We will be able to make it a happier Christmas for many farmers because of Hay Mate."
